BEFRIENDING WALK 2008

Admin Information

1 Name of project

Befriending Walk 2008

2 Description of project

Befriending Walk 2008 is a public awareness and fundraising project which aims to create awareness of lonely seniors in the community, encourage family bonding with the senior folks and provide a meaningful platform for the family to participate.

It encourages family to take time to bond with their senior folks and involve them in their social activities. It also encourages seniors to participate outdoor activities and meet new friends so as to live an active life.

Singapore a fast growing ageing population and there is an inclination of seniors staying on their own, it is therefore essential for us to inculcate the importance of keeping close tie with our old folks. Loneliness in old age can be a scary experience as lonely people often feel a sense of inner emptiness and tend to separate themselves from the society. As a result, it can pose social or psychological problems.

We believe public education is one of the best ways to educate Singaporeans the importance of caring their senior folks at home as well as those in the community.

3 Key objective(s) of project

i. Raise awareness of lonely and vulnerable seniors in the community and the importance of extending a hand of friendship and support to them.

ii. Create an opportunity for the seniors to enjoy nature at a venue which most of them have not been to.

iii. Create an opportunity for family bonding for seniors to walk with their family.

iv. Provide an opportunity for the lonely seniors to experience of incorporating walking as part of active ageing.

v. Raise awareness of the functions and services of Neighbourhood links.

vi. Provide a platform for our volunteers (befrienders), potential befrienders, staff of our corporate/institute partners and donors to experience the satisfaction of being the source of support and encouragement to the lonely seniors during the walk.

iii. About Lions Befrienders
Lions Befrienders Service Association (Singapore) [LBSA] is a Voluntary Welfare Organisation which was founded in 1995 by the Lions Clubs of Singapore and a Lions District Project. We are also a registered member with the National Council of Social Service, the local social services sector’s umbrella body. Our core mission is to aid in the social, psycho-emotional and physical well-being of lonely seniors through community participation whilst upholding our belief that every older person is a valued member of society and deserves to age with grace and dignity.

Our 2 core services are:

Befriending Programme – links trained volunteers to our seniors (aged 65 years and above) and provide psycho-emotional support through weekly visitation, limited health care, simple household chores, errands, meal distribution and recreational activities. Currently, we serve more than 1,700 lonely seniors island wide.

Outreach Programme – provides care and support to seniors (aged 55 years and above) residing at the respective blocks and their neighbourhood via our three Neighbourhood Links (at Ang Mo Kio, Bendemeer and Mei Ling Street) which have a membership of more than 1,800.

Lonely seniors are encouraged to participate in the Centre’s activities such as physical and mental wellness programmes, social integration, meal services, etc.

The Neighbourhood Links manage Alarm Alert System for the homes of the needy seniors for activation for help in the event of emergency.

Being partially funded, Lions Befrienders depend on public’s donation for its outreach programmes at the three Neighbourhood Links.
